If you are one of the many Bikepackers using the Molesworth or Rainbow roads then there is the choice to enter or exit Hanmer Springs by either Jacks Pass or Jollies Pass. To help with the decision making check out our thoughts:

Jacks Pass – Hurunui District Council has transformed this road with a major renovation, a very rideable surface for all but comes with the dust and traffic of this primary route

Jollies Pass – Unmaintained hence great mountain bike riding as very limited traffic, especially up out of the Clarence Valley. The ‘downside’ is the rough rocky and scoured surface on the Hanmer Springs side of the Pass. A challenging route if you are heavily loaded or have skinny tyres – your choice
